Fundamentals in Small Animal Dentistry For The Veterinarian


This 2-day lecture and lab covers fundamentals of canine and feline dentistry with clinical images and intraoral radiographs. From clinical dental anatomy and examination to periodontal disease, fractured teeth, and recognizing common oral pathology to step-by-step extraction principles, regional nerve blocks, and intraoral radiograph interpretation. This course is a complete and detailed course to prepare, refresh, and improve veterinary dentistry clinical and diagnostic skills. The image-based lectures will be supported with comprehensive notes so that the participants can be engaged with the lectures and clinical images and focus on learning. “The program will be submitted for 12 hours of continuing education credit in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval prior to the event.“ 

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will learn fundamental dental anatomy, oral examination, and dental charting. 

2. Participants will learn the pathophysiology and management of periodontal disease. 

3. Participants will learn the importance and interpretation of intraoral radiography. 

4. Participants will learn to recognize common oral pathology including fractured teeth, malocclusion, caries, tooth resorption, etc. and recommended treatment options will be presented. 

5. Participants will learn dental regional analgesia.

6. Participants will learn principles of dental extractions.



Course Curriculum (Lecture/Lab Limited to 20 Participants) - 12 Hours CE

Lecture Day 1: 8 hours

I. Dental Anatomy, Nomenclature, Dental Records  

II. Periodontal Disease  

III. Periodontal Cleaning, Prophylaxis, And Treatments  

IV. Regional Nerve Blocks  

V. Fractured Teeth And Endodontic Disease  

VI. Intraoral Radiology Interpretation  

VII. Step-By-Step Extraction Principles  

VIII. Malocclusion And Miscellaneous Dental Pathology

Lab Day 2: 4 hours

Surgical extractions, intraoral radiograph positioning, regional nerve blocks, periodontal cleaning and charting
