Greyhounds: Dispelling Myths and Misconceptions to Improve Health

Greyhounds are unique canine athletes.Their medical foibles are the stuff of urban legends. The goal of this joint lecture is to clarify and discuss breed predispositions in order to better care for these pets and patients.

  • Dr. Helen Hamilton, DACVIM is a long-time Greyhound enthusiast who has been actively involved in breeding and competing AKC Greyhounds for many years. She has had the privilege of reviewing hundreds of AKC Greyhound medical records. Her insights are valuable for differentiating the unique health problems affecting AKC versus Racing Greyhounds.
  • Dr. Jean Battig, DAVDC worked as a vet on a Greyhound racing track and, since specializing in dentistry and oral surgery, has gained a much greater understanding of breed-specific dental and oral health concerns. She will share her insights into assessment and treatment of oral disease in Greyhounds.
  • Dr. Heidi Shafford, DACVAA has been reviewing and responding to reports of anesthetic complications and deaths in Greyhounds since starting her anesthesia consulting practice in 2007. Her insights help to understand anesthetic risks in the Greyhound and improve anesthetic safety.

Together we hope to dispel many of the myths and misconceptions related to veterinary care of Greyhounds
